About This Track
Released as the third single from 'GINGER' in August 2019, 'BOY BYE' finds BROCKHAMPTON's full roster of vocalists and producers assembled on one track, a rare occurrence in the group's catalogue. The song opens with a member addressing depression head-on, admitting he lacks an answer to the question of how he copes, before the verses spiral through defiance, self-medication, and the pressures of maintaining momentum. Grandma's advice to count blessings sits alongside references to Johnnie Cochran and Michael Keaton, the tone swinging between introspection and bravado. The lyrics catalogue trauma, incarceration, label advances, and the realisation that sobriety has exposed poor behaviour. One verse acknowledges fifteen million on the table whilst noting that none of the group are stable, the candour cutting through the bravado. The track's energy comes from its restlessness, the collective trading lines at pace, each voice adding a layer of stress or swagger. It is BROCKHAMPTON at their most unfiltered, the subject matter heavy but the delivery refusing to slow down.
"BOY BYE" is a single by BROCKHAMPTON, from the album GINGER, released 19th August 2019. The track is 2:22 long. It's filed under Hip-Hop/Rap. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 6 articles about BROCKHAMPTON.
