About This Track
'WEIGHT' arrives midway through 'iridescence', the 2018 album that marked BROCKHAMPTON's first release after a period of upheaval. Kevin Abstract takes a commanding vocal role, the track built around verses that each offer a glimpse into the pressures and inner struggles the group carried as their profile grew. The subject matter is heavy: self-harm, the weight of expectation, the distance fame puts between people who were once close. The lyrics move between confession and reflection. Abstract recalls missing his nieces, feeling defeated, worrying about someone putting the razor down. He misses the old days before the cosigns and the road signs, back when he was writing poems in study hall and didn't know which direction to head. A phone call with his mother becomes a moment of clarity; she tells him not to let those who don't know him dictate his fate, and he reflects on the difficulty of rebuilding what's been broken. The chorus offers a small release, 'I don't wanna waste no more time / I'm ready to go', but the verses stay grounded in the cost of the life they've built, the dish served cold, the foundation shaking under accumulated strain.
