About This Track
A bonus track from Damso's third studio album 'Lithopédion', released in June 2018, 'Ipséité' takes its title from the philosophical term for selfhood – the quality of being oneself, irreducible to external definition. The Belgian rapper frames the song as a defiant assertion of identity against public scrutiny, rapping about accusations of misogyny, media attacks, and the pressures of commercial success whilst insisting he will remain himself regardless. The track went gold within two months of release. Over a single extended verse, Damso moves between personal grievance and existential reflection, touching on family strain, independence as an artist, and the gap between his first million and the tax bill still unpaid. The chorus returns to the central claim of self-sufficiency, the refrain built around the phrase 'moula-la-la' – slang for money – and the question of whether he will have enough to live in good conditions once the state takes its share. The production stays sparse, leaving room for the density of the lyric and the flatness of the delivery.
