About This Track

'Beware' unfolds as a six-minute meditation on desire and restraint, built around the image of contaminated or dangerous water. The track circles obsessively around a single question: do you like the way the water tastes? It's a refrain that suggests both attraction and peril, pleasure shadowed by the knowledge that indulgence might be ruinous. Chino Moreno's vocals drift between resignation and warning, whilst the arrangement moves with glacial heaviness, each element sparse enough to let the dread accumulate. The song's emotional core rests on a love that cannot be consummated or sustained. Lines like "you should know I could never make it work" and "it was never safe" sketch a relationship defined by what cannot happen, what must remain forbidden. The water becomes a metaphor for that impossible desire, something that tastes like fire but must be approached with caution, if at all. By the final repetition of the title phrase, the warning has become almost incantatory, a mantra against surrender.

"Beware" is a track by Deftones, from the album Saturday Night Wrist, released 24th October 2006. The track is 6:01 long. It's filed under Hard Rock. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 14 articles about Deftones.

Lyrics

Beware

You should know by now really
That this could end, really
You should know I could never make it work
Wake up, let's pretend, really, babe
(Really)

Do you like the way the water tastes?
Like on fire
For you but you could never say
Then come forth cause it's coming round
Do you like the way the water tastes?
Round the water

Beware, the water

You should know, babe
At least pretend you did know why
It's not like you watch
So go on, take a drink, really, babe

You like the way the water tastes
Like on fire
You knew but it was never safe
Take one more cause it's coming round
(Do you like the way the water tastes?)
Round the water

Beware, the water
Beware, the water
(Beware)

Teeth are dry
The wind blows
If you come drinking
There you go

Beware, the water
Beware, the water
(Beware)

Beware, the water
(Beware)
Do you like the way the water tastes?
Do you like the way the water tastes?

Beautiful and brutal: Deftones transform Crystal Palace into metal's new temple

"I’ve been saving myself just for you," Chino Moreno tells the crowd, just a day after Deftones pulled out of their Glastonbury slot due to illness. Whether that’s sincere or not, it hardly matters. By the time they hit the stage at Crystal Palace Park on Sunday night, Deftones are in peak form.
