About This Track

'6 Man' draws its title and central conceit from NBA player Lou Williams, who built a reputation as a prolific bench scorer. Drake adopts the sixth-man role as a metaphor for operating outside the spotlight whilst still commanding influence, weaving basketball references through boasts about self-reliance and late-night hustle. The track appeared on 'If You're Reading This It's Too Late' in 2015.

The production is sparse and the delivery unhurried, Drake moving between casual flex and cold dismissal. He credits his own instincts, describes killing careers like a slasher-film villain, and insists he runs his operation without outside help. The refrain loops back to working the night shift, a grounding detail that anchors the millionaire present to the grind that preceded it.

The closing verse shifts register, a reassurance to a partner not to worry about his whereabouts or company. It softens the posture without retracting it, the song ending on mutual trust rather than another assertion of dominance.
