About This Track

Released in June 2017 as the second single from Future's sixth studio album 'Hndrxx', 'PIE' pairs the Atlanta rapper with Chris Brown over production by Detail and D. A. Doman. The track leans into the album's more melodic, relationship-focused terrain whilst retaining Future's signature intoxicated drawl. The song centres on a casual arrangement the narrator refuses to apologise for, built around the repeated refrain urging a side partner to indulge without expectation of commitment. Future adopts a posture of unapologetic hedonism, the production spare enough to let the vocal interplay between rapper and singer carry the mood. There's a studied carelessness to the whole enterprise, luxury gestures deployed to maintain distance rather than intimacy. Brown's contributions thread through the chorus, his melodic runs softening the edges of Future's blunted delivery. The result sits comfortably in the 'Hndrxx' mode: slower, more openly romantic in gesture if not in substance, a counterweight to the harder trap material that defined much of Future's output either side of this album.
