About This Track

The closing track of Ghost's second album, 'Monstrance Clock' constructs a ritual tableau around its titular percussion, a hypnotic pulse that anchors Papa Emeritus II's invocation to "come together for Lucifer's son". Black candles, aligned minds, paralyzing pentagrams: the lyrics build a ceremonial atmosphere, each repetition of the chorus deepening the sense of collective trance. The song almost always serves as Ghost's final number in live performance, a structural anchor that mirrors the album's opening chant. What begins as a measured incantation swells into something closer to a choral mass, the outro handed to a full ensemble whose voices echo and layer the central refrain. The effect is deliberately ecclesiastical, borrowing the grandeur and hypnotic repetition of religious music to frame something explicitly profane. It is Ghost's gift to make such inversions feel neither gimmicky nor hollow, but genuinely unsettling.
