About This Track

Harry Nilsson's meditation on solitude strips loneliness down to its arithmetic. "One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do," he sings, and the song builds its case through simple negation: two is nearly as bad, "no" is the saddest word, and the absence of another person leaves only the echo of yesterday's rhymes. The composition moves with the inevitability of proof, each repetition deepening the isolation rather than cheapening it. The track became a standard, later reaching the charts as a cover, but Nilsson's original holds the song at its most austere. There is no arrangement to soften the message, no production flourish to make loneliness palateable. The idea and the voice are enough, which is precisely the point: one person, one song, one inescapable truth about what it means to be alone.

"One" is a track by Harry Nilsson, from the album Aerial Ballet, released 2nd March 1968. Full lyrics are available below.

Lyrics

One

[Verse 1]

One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do

Two can be as bad as one

It's the loneliest number since the number one

[Verse 2]

"No" is the saddest experience you'll ever know

Yes, it's the saddest experience you'll ever know

[Refrain]

Because one is the loneliest number that you'll ever do

One is the loneliest number that you'll ever know

[Bridge]

It's just no good anymore since you went away

Now I spend my time just making rhymes of yesterday

[Refrain]

Because one is the loneliest number that you'll ever do

One is the loneliest number that you'll ever know

[Outro]

One is the loneliest number

One is the loneliest number

One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do

One is the loneliest number, much, much worse than two

One is a number divided by two

One

One is the loneliest number
