About This Track
Released in February 2013 as the lead single from 'Overgrown', 'Retrograde' marked a shift in James Blake's approach. Where his debut had favoured skeletal arrangements and negative space, this track layers his falsetto over a steady pulse and swelling strings, the production still restrained but newly willing to occupy the foreground. The song won an Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song.
Blake sings of isolation and endurance, the lyric built around a repeated plea: 'Show me while you're strong / Ignore everybody else / We're alone now'. The verses circle questions of belonging and uncertainty ('Is this darkness or the dawn?'), the chorus offering companionship rather than answers. The repetition feels less like reassurance than a kind of vigil, Blake's voice holding the line whilst the arrangement swells and recedes around it.
The track became a touchstone for Blake's second album, its combination of emotional directness and formal control setting the tone for the record that followed.
"Retrograde" is a single by James Blake, from the album Overgrown, released 4th April 2013. The track is 3:44 long. It's filed under Dance. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 15 articles about James Blake.

That's not much notice, mate.

Don't take your eyes off him. He'll only drop another surprise album.

At least he's warned us about this one.
