About This Track

Khalid confronts isolation and desperation across 'Alive', a track built on the tension between withdrawal and the need to be heard. Unread messages pile up; he's turned his phone off, cut himself loose, and now finds himself adrift. The song moves between addresses to unnamed figures, a gatekeeper, a reaper, a sister, each appeal a small act of reaching out from a place of deep disconnection. The instrumental arrangement pairs light acoustic and electric elements with lyrics that refuse to look away from their subject matter. The chorus circles back to a single, unbearable paradox: "I shouldn't have to die to feel alive." Khalid doesn't resolve this tension so much as sit with it, the song functioning less as a statement of intent than as a document of the moment before clarity might arrive. There's an apology embedded in the second verse, directed at someone he wishes could have stopped him from falling. The production stays restrained, letting the weight of the words carry the track forward without melodrama.
