About This Track
'Heaven' finds Khalid in a state of surrender, his voice floating over a maudlin piano arrangement as he grapples with inner turmoil. The song moves between devotion and despair: a ride-or-die pledge that doubles as a farewell, a plea to heaven itself to make some kind of offer. There is resignation in the repeated refrain, a sense of having exhausted earthly consolations. The lyrics trade in paradox. He and his companion were "right about being wrong"; they burn out knowing they might not survive it. Yet there is also a strange defiance in the refusal to look back, in the insistence that "my name shines like a song / That you've been singing all along". The song circles its central image of disappearance, asking heaven to intervene before there is nothing left but memory.
