About This Track

'Coaster' appeared as the third promotional single from Khalid's debut album 'American Teen' in December 2016, a few months ahead of the record's March 2017 release. The track runs just over three minutes and sits comfortably within the R&B framework that anchored the album's breakthrough success.

Khalid charts the unsteady emotional aftermath of a relationship that didn't survive scrutiny. The central metaphor holds: he's roller-coasting through the stages, from the opening admission of feeling low and searching for pieces to cover the hole, through to a tentative claim of feeling better and finally special. The lyrics trace the familiar push-pull of post-breakup resolve, moving between 'I'll fight for your love' and the closing insistence that the other person shouldn't come back at all.

The song captures the fluctuating honesty of someone not quite over it but trying inside, the repetition of 'you weren't the one for me' functioning less as certainty than as rehearsal. It's an early example of the plainspoken emotional register that would become Khalid's signature.
