About This Track

'Rent' by Lights is a 2022 pop track from the album 'PEP'. The lyrics cast a guarded, anxious insistence on boundaries and control of one’s inner world, with the narrator returning to a familiar audio trigger and treating it like an escalating mental reality. They imagine their thoughts as a furnished space that demands payment, promising that entry requires costs and warning that the arrangement is not free, as they “keep a checklist of offenses”. The tone is sharp and defensive, but also playful in its bargaining metaphor.

"Rent" is a track by Lights, from the album PEP, released 31st March 2022. The track is 3:27 long. It's filed under Pop. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 1 article about Lights.

Lyrics

Rent

I know it ain't nice
But I feel it again
I hear that song
On the speakers again

But it's all up there
My imagination is as tall as yours

I keep a checklist of offenses, ooh
I stay awake to put up fences
If you wanna live in my head, you gotta pay the expenses
And honey, you can't afford what the rent is

You can't afford what the rent is
Honey, you can't afford what the rent is
You can't afford what the rent is

I fantasize when I close my eyes
Explosions in the sky
Lovey in my mind
But I think I know it's all a waste of time

I keep a checklist of offenses, ooh
I stay awake to put up fences
If you wanna live in my head, you gotta pay the expenses
And honey, you can't afford what the rent is

You can't afford what the rent is
You can't afford what the rent is
You can't afford what the rent is

Sometimes I'm a floating head, no body
Just drifting over my bed, no body
Sometimes I'm a floating head, no body
Just drifting over my bed, no body
But it's all there
And my imagination is as tall as yours

I keep a checklist of offenses, ooh
I stay awake to put up fences
If you wanna live in my head, you gotta pay the expenses
And honey, you can't afford what the rent is

You can't afford what the rent is
Honey, you can't afford what the rent is
You can't afford what the rent is
