About This Track

A Dork five-star record, 'David' closes Lorde's fourth album with a moment of shimmering vulnerability. Written with Jim-E Stack in 2022, it was one of the first songs created for 'Virgin', and it carries the weight of that early reckoning. The track reflects on an abusive relationship, the anguish of having given too much away paired with a declaration of freedom from domination. Lorde sings of making someone God because it was all she knew how to do, the lyric arriving with unrefined clarity.

The song questions whether love will return, whether trust can be rebuilt, the refrain casting each prior moment on 'Virgin' in new light. She does not belong to anyone. It is a realisation the entire album has been hurtling towards, a turning point where she begins to separate who she is from who she was expected to be. The emotional intensity hints at the complexity of a relationship that shaped her, the album's title and the raw unfolding of feeling throughout suggesting the cost of that entanglement.

'David' leaves Lorde holding the tools to reinvent herself again, the lesson earned through excavation rather than retreat. It is a poignant close to a record that finds beauty in diving headfirst into the mess, reflection as a means of propelling forwards.

"David" is a track by Lorde, from the album Virgin, released 26th June 2025. The track is 3:25 long. It's filed under Pop. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 20 articles about Lorde.

Lyrics

David

O, dark day
Was I just someone to dominate?
Worthy opponent, flint to my blade, now we're playing with shadows
At the Sunset Tower, you said, "Open your mouth"
I did
And what came spilling out that day was the truth
If I'd had virginity, I would have given that too

Why do we run to the ones we do?
I don't belong to anyone, ooh

O, dark day
Was I just young blood to get on tape?
'Cause you dimed me out when it got hard
Uppercut to the throat, I was off-guard
Pure heroine mistaken for featherweight
But what came spilling out that day was the truth
And once I could sing again, I swore I'd never let
Let myself sing again for you
Oh-whoa-oh
Oh-ah-ooh-whoa-oh

Singing
Said, why do we run to the ones we do?
I don't belong to anyone, ooh
I made you God 'cause it was all that I knew how to do
But I don't belong to anyone
Ooh-ooh-hoo

Am I ever gon' love again?
Am I ever gon' love again?
Am I ever gon' love again?
Am I ever gon' love again?
Tell it to the rock doves
Will you ever feel like a friend?
Sing it to the fountain
Am I ever gon' love again?
Till you understand
Tell it to 'em
