The third track on Lorde's fourth album 'Virgin' is a highlight in part because it refuses to settle. A Dork five-star record, the album turns inward whilst simultaneously throwing itself into the chaos of the world, chasing impulses and experiences above all else. 'Shapeshifter' embodies that restlessness: textured, almost garage-esque beats paired with strings that build around the bridge, the song questions seeking validation and changing with each new presence, but feels more akin to a vent than anything conclusive. Lorde catalogues the roles she's inhabited ('I've been the ice, I've been the flame / I've been the prize, the ball, the chain'), the lyric tumbling out in an uncontrollable rush. The refrain of shifting shapes, the visions of teenage innocence, the compulsive pull-and-push dynamic ('I'll kick you out and pull you in') all speak to a skittish energy that intensifies the feeling of immediacy. She insists she's not affected, but the song's very existence suggests otherwise. It's an anthem for the avoidant, yes, but also a standout in her discography precisely because it sits with the discomfort rather than resolving it. The album as a whole finds beauty in diving headfirst into the mess, and 'Shapeshifter' captures that impulse at its most vivid.
