The opening track from 'Virgin', released as the album's third and final single in June 2025. Lorde wrote and produced the song with Jim-E Stack, with additional production from Buddy Ross. She described it as an ode to city life and horniness, and the lyric bears that out: the pavement's heat, the fountain mist, the liquid crystal in her grip, a wish made as the piercing needle goes in at Canal Street. The narrator burns and sings and schemes and dances, some days a woman, some days a man, ready to feel like she doesn't have the answers. The production pairs shuffling, skittery beats with textured layers that intensify the sense of compulsive forward motion. Lorde adopts a voice of raw immediacy, each confession tumbling out in an uncontrollable rush. She addresses someone who doesn't deal much in love and affection but might make an exception, the refrain lifting into a plea to be carried up, to be broken down until she's just a breath, just a voice living in your head. The closing line sends a postcard from the edge of a world that's been to hell and back. A Dork five-star record, 'Virgin' turns Lorde's gaze more inward than ever whilst simultaneously seeing her throw herself into the thick of the chaotic world. 'Hammer' sets the tone for an album that finds beauty in diving headfirst into the mess, embracing uncertainty and the peace in the madness overhead.
