About This Track

'Complexity' finds Madison Beer examining the impossible arithmetic of love and self-worth. The track circles a single, devastating question: how can she expect to be loved by someone who cannot love themselves? It is a song about the weight of trying to fill someone else's emptiness, and the futility baked into that effort. Beer's voice carries the repetition without exhaustion, the chorus building through insistence rather than crescendo. The lyrics move between her own fractured self-image and the damage inflicted by someone else's carelessness, a severed moment turned into a joke she cannot unhear. There is no resolution here, only the honest acknowledgment that some gaps cannot be bridged by devotion alone.

"complexity" is a track by Madison Beer, from the album locket, released 16th January 2026. The track is 2:37 long. It's filed under Pop. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 15 articles about Madison Beer.

Lyrics

complexity

All of my fine complexities
The baggage that I turned into beauty
I have a way, a tendency (tendency)
I tend to stay with people who leave
But how can I expect you to love me
When you don't even love yourself?
How can I expect you to want me
When you want nothin' for yourself?
How can I expect you to love me?
To love me, to love me
How can I expect you to love me?
To love me, to love me
Remember the time that you severed me
And you made a joke, but what did you mean?
I look in the mirror and don't see what you see (see)
Wish I could forget what you said to me
But how can I expect you to love me
When you don't even love yourself?
How can I expect you to want me
When you want nothin' for yourself?
How can I expect you to love me?
To love me, to love me
How can I expect you to love me?
To love me (love me)

But how can I expect you to love me? (Me)
When you don't even love yourself?
How can I expect you to want me (me)
When you want nothin' for yourself?
How can I expect you to love me?
To love me, to love me
How can I expect you to love me?
To love me, love me

Madison Beer is shutting out the noise on 'locket'

Discovered in her teens and scrutinised ever since, Madison Beer has learnt the hard way when to let the world in and when to shut it out. Now, with ‘locket’, she’s stepping back from the noise, the thinkpieces and the pressure to constantly prove herself to focus on creative freedom and making music that follows her gut.
