Miguel maps the arc of a new relationship across a single night and morning, each stage sliding into the next with the languid inevitability of pillow talk giving way to sleep. Released as the lead single from 'Wildheart' in May 2015, the track originally appeared on a free three-song EP in late 2014; the album version replaced a guest verse from Wale with additional material from Miguel himself. He is credited as sole producer, and the production carries that intimacy, all peach-coloured skies and the smell of hair on a pillow.
The lyric moves through conversation and touch, street art and sarcasm, the small sacraments of early intimacy. Miguel sings of wanting to paint these moments in vibrant hues, the refrain cycling back to coffee in the morning, the point where desire settles into something quieter. The song's explicitness is frank rather than lurid, the title's alternate version ('Coffee (Fucking)') making plain what the verses already imply. It remains one of the more direct treatments of adult intimacy in recent R&B, unashamed and surprisingly tender.
"Coffee" is a single by Miguel, from the album Wildheart, released 25th June 2015. The track is 4:47 long. It's filed under R&B/Soul. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 1 article about Miguel.
