About This Track

'Simplethings' strips back the usual R&B posturing to something more direct. Miguel trades the grand gesture for intimacy, the chorus a litany of modest wants: someone to smoke with, lay with, laugh with. The sentiment runs through both voices in the lyric, a mutual rejection of surface glamour in favour of connection. Future's verse, added for the remix treatment, pulls the track in a different direction, his delivery more restless and material even as he circles the same theme of presence over spectacle. The production, handled by Miguel and Brook D'Leau, leaves space around the vocal, the arrangement unhurried. Originally released in early 2014 for the television series Girls, the song found its place on Miguel's third album 'Wildheart' the following year, serving as the record's second single. The remix brought Chris Brown alongside Future, though the core appeal remains the plainness of the ask, the refusal to complicate what might be straightforward.
