About This Track

Released on 30 October 1995, 'Wonderwall' became one of Oasis's most popular songs, selling over a million copies. The single arrived with B-sides 'Round Are Way', 'The Swamp Song', and 'The Masterplan', the latter of which would later be recognised as one of Noel Gallagher's finest compositions in its own right.

The lyric pivots on inarticulate devotion, Gallagher writing 'there are many things that I would like to say to you, but I don't know how' before landing on the chorus plea: 'maybe you're gonna be the one that saves me'. The arrangement is simple, the melody immediate, the sentiment just vague enough to carry a thousand different meanings for a thousand different listeners. That openness helped the song transcend its mid-nineties Britpop context and settle into something closer to a standard.

Gallagher would later accuse Green Day of lifting the arrangement wholesale for 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams', claiming the two songs shared exactly the same structure. Whether or not the charge holds, the comparison speaks to how deeply 'Wonderwall' embedded itself in the vocabulary of guitar-driven melancholy.

"Wonderwall" is a single by Oasis, released 30th October 1995. The track is 4:19 long. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 20 articles about Oasis.

Lyrics

Wonderwall

Today is gonna be the day that they're gonna throw it back to you
And by now, you should've somehow realised what you gotta do
I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now

And backbeat, the word is on the street that the fire in your heart is out
I'm sure you've heard it all before, but you never really had a doubt
I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now

And all the roads we have to walk are winding
And all the lights that lead us there are blinding
There are many things that I would like to say to you, but I don't know how

Because maybe
You're gonna be the one that saves me
And after all

You're my wonderwall

Today was gonna be the day, but they'll never throw it back to you
And by now, you should've somehow realised what you're not to do
I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now

And all the roads that lead you there were winding
And all the lights that light the way are blinding
There are many things that I would like to say to you, but I don't know how

I said maybe
You're gonna be the one that saves me

And after all

You're my wonderwall

I said maybe (I said maybe)
You're gonna be the one that saves me
And after all

You're my wonderwall

I said maybe (I said maybe)
You're gonna be the one that saves me (saves me)
You're gonna be the one that saves me (saves me)
You're gonna be the one that saves me (saves me)

"It’s good to be fucking back!": Oasis arrive at Wembley Stadium

For all the melodrama of Britpop, Oasis were always the people’s band – delivering over-the-top anthems about brotherhood, ambition and optimism from shaky foundations that felt like they could implode at a moment’s notice.
