About This Track

A meditation on collective power and environmental ruin, 'The Numbers' moves with the careful tread of someone speaking at the end of things. Thom Yorke's voice sits low in the mix, almost conversational, whilst the arrangement builds from restraint into something approaching urgency. The song refuses easy answers. It names the failures plainly: the system is a lie, the river running dry, the wings of a butterfly caught in the collapse. But it also insists on something harder to articulate. The refrain "one day at a time" is not comfort; it is a discipline, a way of holding ground when the scale of the problem threatens to dissolve individual will. The track was originally titled 'Silent Spring' when Yorke first performed it at a climate conference in Paris in late 2015. That earlier title pointed toward the environmental argument more directly. The final version, retitled for the album, shifts the emphasis slightly. Numbers here are not data points but a kind of false certainty, a system that mistakes measurement for understanding. Against that, the song poses something older and more stubborn: the earth itself, and the human capacity to organise, to resist, to take back what has been taken. It is a protest song that does not sound like one, which may be the only kind that still carries weight.

Lyrics

The Numbers

It holds us like a phantom
The touch is like a breeze
It shines its understanding
See the moon smiling
Open on all channels
Ready to receive
And we're not at the mercy
Of your shimmers or spells
Your shimmers or spells
We are of the earth
To her we do return
The future is inside us
It's not somewhere else
It's not somewhere else
It's not somewhere else
(One day at a time)
One day at a time
We call upon the people
People have this power
The numbers don't decide
The system is a lie
The river running dry
The wings of a butterfly
And you may pour us away like soup
Like we're pretty broken flowers
We'll take back what is ours
Take back what is ours
One day at a time

It's day two of Rock Werchter, and Radiohead have never sounded this good

"It's very rare that you find a crowd that can clap in time," Maggie Rogers tells her audience. "You guys are the best clappers I've ever been with." Following the searing sonics of Slowdive on the main stage, it's a performance riddled with technical issues…
