About This Track

A power-ballad built on Ruel's command of his vocal range, 'Say' captures the paralysis of emotional inarticulacy. The song turns on a simple premise: the inability to express what matters most, and the fear that silence will damage what you're trying to protect. Ruel sings of lying awake rehearsing conversations that never happen, of words that won't come, of choosing flight over the vulnerability that honesty demands. The track draws from lived experience. Ruel has explained that 'Say' emerged from personal hurt, a song about problems he was actually going through at the time. That specificity anchors the ballad's ache. The falsetto-laden arrangement sits somewhere between alt-R&B and something more traditionally heartfelt, letting the vocal performance carry the weight of what remains unspoken.

"Say" is a track by Ruel, from the album Ready, released 14th June 2018. The track is 3:47 long. It's filed under Pop. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 12 articles about Ruel.

Lyrics

Say

I've been feeling like it's impossible to say it all
And I'm losing all control
'Cause I wish that I could break the fall and save it all
But I've been holding it too close

Wish I knew what you're thinking
Words don't come that easy
We might be broken by design
I can't help how I'm feeling
Scared of my own reasons
I don't wanna waste your time

Searching for another way
Another way, another way
To keep her safe another day
Another day, another day
It's easier to runaway
Runaway, runaway
Than to know what to say
Say, say
Than to know what to say

I just lie awake and play it out in my head
Like I know what to do
But the world has got a different plan for me and you
And it hurts when it's true

I don't know what you're thinking
Words don't come that easy
We might be broken by design
I can't help how I'm feeling
Scared of my own reasons
I don't wanna waste your time

Searching for another way
Another way, another way
To keep her safe another day
Another day, another day
It's easier to runaway
Runaway, runaway
Than to know what to say
Say, say

(Say, say, say)
(Say, say, say)

Searching for another way
Another way, another way
To keep her safe another day
Another day, another day
It's easier to runaway
Runaway, runaway
Than to know what to say
Say, say
Than to know what to say
Say, say
To know what to say
Say, say

Ruel stops holding back: “Now, who gives a shit?”

After years of being labelled a pop prodigy, Ruel is rewriting his own narrative. The London-born, Sydney-raised singer first broke through as a teenager, but with 'Kicking My Feet' and the upcoming 'Kicking & Screaming', he's embracing big feelings and unapologetic joy. Growing up might just be his best era yet.
