Oslo occupies a 140-year-old former railway building in Hackney Central, the old ticket hall of the original Hackney station, which over the decades had been a market, a toy shop and even a squat before opening as a venue in 2014. The format is the now-familiar east London double-decker: a bar and kitchen downstairs, with DJs running late, and a live room upstairs holding several hundred, somewhere in the region of 375 to 400 depending on the night. It is the sort of place that does the unglamorous, essential work of catching bands on the way up. The stage has form for spotting them early. Dua Lipa, Sam Smith, Marina, Sky Ferreira, Klaxons, Maneskin and The Last Dinner Party have all passed through, several of them long before the rooms got bigger. It remains one of the more reliable barometers of who is about to matter in Hackney.
