Union Transfer is a roughly 1,200-capacity venue in Philadelphia, housed in an 1889 building that began as a farmers' market and later served as a railway baggage-transfer depot, the Union Transfer Baggage Express Co., from which it takes its name. It opened as a music venue in September 2011, an adaptive reuse led by local promoter R5 Productions with The Bowery Presents, built to fill the gap between the city's small clubs and its arenas. The opening night went to local heroes Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Widely regarded as one of Philadelphia's best rooms, it programmes broadly across indie rock, punk and hip-hop and has become a near-mandatory stop for touring acts passing through the city. The old depot's bones, retained signage and all, give it a sense of place that a generic box could never replicate.
