Adele turns the idiom inside out here, finding virtue in heartbreak rather than stability. The song rejects the comfort of being "right as rain", that state of perfect equilibrium, in favour of the rawness that comes with loss. She argues that pain sharpens you, that struggle teaches you how to feel, that the worst moments paradoxically hold more truth than the smooth ones. It's a defiant reframing of romantic failure as something closer to wisdom. The track builds its case through repetition and incremental shifts. Each chorus circles back to the same question, but the verses deepen the argument, moving from personal exhaustion to a broader critique of surfaces and pretence. When she sings "at least when you're at your worst, you know how to feel things", there's a kind of clarity in that surrender. The production stays relatively restrained, letting her voice carry the weight of conviction without ornament.
