About This Track

A study in restraint, 'First Love' strips away the drama that defines much of Adele's debut. A celesta chimes softly throughout, the arrangement refusing to build toward any climax or release. The song is written entirely by Adele, and it moves at the pace of someone running out of words, the narrator caught between the need to leave and the weight of saying so. The lyrics circle a familiar breakup logic: exhaustion masquerading as clarity, the admission that staying would mean choking on unspoken resentment. There is no anger here, only the flat tiredness of a love that has simply dried up. Adele's voice sits low in the mix, almost conversational, asking forgiveness from a first love she no longer wants to touch.
