A vision of tomorrow where mass entertainment and connectivity have flattened all difference into a single, available-everywhere product. 'The Universal' imagines a future where satellite dishes sit in every home and everyone sings along to the same songs, words be damned. The track builds on a simple, almost nursery-rhyme insistence: "it really, really, really could happen". There is no irony in the delivery, only a kind of weary acceptance. The song was first sketched during earlier recording sessions before being revived and reworked into the form that appears here. What emerges is a piece that moves between resignation and something close to comfort, its repeated refrain suggesting that when the days fall through you, the best response is simply to let them go. It sits as a moment of strange grace in an album otherwise preoccupied with sharper satirical edges.
