About This Track
'BrokEn' strips Coldplay back to essentials: Chris Martin leading a gospel choir through a call-and-response built on piano and finger snaps. The song moves through states of spiritual need, each verse naming a condition of vulnerability. A head hanging sorrowfully. Hunger and thirst. The repeated plea for light in darkness becomes both the song's architecture and its prayer. The arrangement's restraint serves the lyrics. There is no elaborate production to soften the directness of the appeal, no instrumental flourish to distract from the human voice asking for grace. By the final verses, Martin and the choir have moved from asking to asserting: in the darkness, he sings, I'm alright, because the Lord will shine a light. It is a small song about large things, and it trusts that simplicity enough.
