About This Track
The fifth track on the first side of Coldplay's eighth studio album 'Everyday Life', 'Daddy' was released as a promotional single on 20 November 2019 alongside 'Champion of the World', two days before the album arrived. The song was written by the band members and produced by The Dream Team. Built around a child's perspective, the lyric addresses an absent father with a mixture of longing and tentative acceptance. Chris Martin sings 'Daddy, are you out there? / Daddy, won't you come and play?', the questions direct and unadorned. The repetition of distance, 'You're so far away', gives way to a fragile refrain of reassurance, the child insisting 'That's okay, I'm okay' even as the plea for presence continues. By the close, the voice asks for just one day, the simplicity of the request carrying the weight of what remains unmet.
