A meditation on displacement and longing, 'Èkó' finds Chris Martin tracing the arc of a man named Joseph who arrives in Lagos bearing memory and dream. The city emerges not as destination but as threshold, a place of stray dogs and corrugate cathedrals where pilgrims move in endless traffic. Martin's lyrics move between the concrete and the mythic, between the sight of gridlocked millions and the pull of an absent sky. The song opens into something larger with its chorus, which invokes Africa not as geography but as sanctuary. Rivers run deep and wide; mothers sing children to sleep with reassurance. Tiwa Savage's voice enters in the second chorus, anchoring the song's emotional centre in a duet that speaks of dancing in water, of holding each other close. What begins as one man's story becomes a shared space, a collective dream of safety and belonging that the lyrics suggest exists in the space between arrival and home.
