About This Track

A five-minute study in emotional stalemate, 'Battle-Axe' finds Deftones circling a relationship locked in mutual denial. The narrator wants sleep while the other stays awake; he insists she's not crazy whilst she refuses to believe it. There's a peculiar pride in the dynamic, a twisted satisfaction in being needed, even as both parties cling to versions of themselves that no longer fit. The song's architecture mirrors this deadlock. Deftones repeat their central phrases with hypnotic precision, the lyrics folding back on themselves like a conversation that never quite resolves. "You love to think it will always, always" becomes a mantra of stubborn attachment, a refusal to accept that patterns can break. What emerges is less a cry for change than an acknowledgment that some people are bound to each other precisely because they cannot imagine being bound to anyone else.

"Battle-Axe" is a track by Deftones, from the album Deftones, released 1992. The track is 5:02 long. It's filed under Hard Rock. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 14 articles about Deftones.

Lyrics

Battle-Axe

I want to sleep if you are awake
Still makin' believe that you aren't at all crazy
And if you don't believe I think you should
You make me so proud

Still you love to think you have always been this way
But you're all wrong

And you only sleep when you've lost cause
Well I still believe that the cause was always me
And if you don't believe I think you should
You make me so proud

Still you love to think you have always been this way
Well I'd love to think you will someday feel the same

And you love to think it will always, always
And you love to think it will always, always

If you still believe it will always be this way
Well you're all wrong
Yes you're

Beautiful and brutal: Deftones transform Crystal Palace into metal's new temple

"I’ve been saving myself just for you," Chino Moreno tells the crowd, just a day after Deftones pulled out of their Glastonbury slot due to illness. Whether that’s sincere or not, it hardly matters. By the time they hit the stage at Crystal Palace Park on Sunday night, Deftones are in peak form.
