'Absolution' traces a life spent chasing material gain and status, framed as a kind of slow dying. Ghost's narrator watches someone accumulate possessions and accolades, forever reaching toward something just beyond grasp, convinced that wealth and achievement will deliver salvation. The song's architecture is simple and repetitive: desire breeds restlessness; restlessness breeds the need for forgiveness. The refrain strips away nuance. Hands raised to the sky, knees bent in supplication, the repeated cry for absolution becomes both plea and warning. Ghost suggests that all those things you desire will be found in fire, a neat inversion of the promise that material success offers heaven. What remains is the cycle itself: the striving, the dissatisfaction, the desperate appeal for redemption that comes too late.
