About This Track
The second single from Ghost's fourth studio album 'Prequelle', 'Dance Macabre' arrived in May 2018 after a surprise live debut earlier that month. The track topped the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart for two weeks in February 2019, its melodic sweep and theatrical drive finding purchase beyond the band's established following. The title invokes a medieval phenomenon tied to the bubonic plague, the same pestilence that haunts 'Prequelle' opener 'Rats'. Yet the lyrics pivot between courtship and mortality, the narrator pleading to bewitch a lover one last time whilst sensing the sting of an ending. Ghost frame desire as a ritual against the clock, the chime close to midnight marking both romantic urgency and the inexorable close. That duality, lust shadowed by finality, runs through the chorus and the verses alike. The band's knack for wrapping darkness in accessible melody holds firm, the track's surface warmth never quite masking the chill underneath.
"Dance Macabre" is a track by Ghost, from the album Prequelle, released 31st May 2018. The track is 3:40 long. It's filed under Metal. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 12 articles about Ghost.
