About This Track
'Griftwood' arrives as a ten-track deep cut on Impera, dressed in arena rock grandeur but preoccupied with something altogether more caustic: the figure of the false preacher, the charlatan who weaponises faith for personal gain. Ghost's lyrical theme cuts against the song's monumental surface, a tension that gives the track its bite. The music itself is gargantuan. Opener 'Imperium' sets the record's grand statement, but it is 'Griftwood' that exemplifies the album's commitment to rock music at its most expansive. The song builds on a foundation of conviction and swagger, Ghost adopting the voice of an immovable force ("I'm your rock, baby / I won't back down") whilst the lyrics interrogate the mechanics of spiritual manipulation and the promise of deliverance from suffering. A Dork four-star record, Impera closes with 'Respite on the Spitalfields', a statement that both satisfies and leaves wanting for more.
