About This Track

The opening verse casts Hozier as Orpheus, the devotee driven underground by grief and need, compelled to turn back and lose Eurydice. He imagines himself as the voice urging that fatal glance, then as the immediate forgiveness in the woman left behind. The refrain 'Imagine being loved by me' frames devotion as overwhelming, mythic in scale. Later verses shift the lens inward. He admits to imagining the object of desire in ways he tries to conceal, speaking carefully for fear of revealing the intensity of his thoughts. The imagery reaches for absolutes: the last shred of truth in the myth of true love, the release humanity dreams of, the final witness marvelling at God before solitude and surrender. The song moves between restraint and abandon, the gap between what is said and what is felt.
