About This Track

Justin Bieber and Tori Kelly trade verses on a song about two people caught between their current lives and the pull of an unfinished history. Kelly sings first, describing someone making promises elsewhere whilst harbouring the memory of what they shared; Bieber responds with his own catalogue of missed moments and unplayed hands. The chorus settles into a kind of resigned recognition: they think about each other still, they're both pretending to be fine, and after all this time the feeling hasn't shifted. The song builds its case through domestic detail. A goodwill couch, a best friend's house, the small intimacies that linger longer than they should. Bieber frames himself as the source of something irreplaceable, a "fire" that a new relationship cannot replicate. Kelly and Bieber harmonise on the repeated refrain, their voices layered until the distinction between longing and acceptance blurs.
