Emma Ogier pays homage to Joni Mitchell's 'Coyote' on new single 'Keep You'
The Houston songwriter heads out with Whitney and Hovvdy this autumn, with an Austin City Limits appearance in between.
About This Track
'Empty' opens Kevin Abstract's second studio album 'American Boyfriend: A Suburban Love Story', released in November 2016. The track arrived as the second single from the record in September that year, setting the tone for an album framed as an emotional exploration of love and sexuality from a youthful perspective. Abstract maps the tension between wanting to leave and needing to return, the lyric moving between sweaty palms on an empty road and a mother blowing up his phone. The chorus plants him outside a front door on a twelve-speed bike, emotions worn plainly; the verses catalogue small humiliations, a hated yearbook photo, a hated passport, public transport fatigue, a prom never attended. The closing lines pull in opposite directions: an empty home, a wish to be American, a family gone but loved regardless. The production leaves space around the confession, Roy Blair's voice folding into the refrain as the song circles its contradictions without resolving them.
