About This Track

Lily Allen spends the small hours awake and spiralling, unable to stop replaying an infidelity. The song finds her at 4 AM in fight-or-flight mode, mind locked on the image of her partner with someone else. She is dissociated, furious, sleepless. The title is also the chorus: 'Ruminating, ruminating, ruminating, ruminating', a hypnotic loop that mirrors the obsessive thought patterns she cannot break. What cuts deepest is not the betrayal itself but the conversation around it. Her partner had asked, with a kind of casual cruelty, whether she wanted to know the details. She didn't answer then. She still doesn't know. The song circles that unanswered question, the phone call too big for the moment, the need for reassurance that she is still his priority even as the evidence suggests otherwise. Allen's voice carries the exhaustion of someone who has turned the night inside out looking for an answer that won't come.
