About This Track

A stripped-back funk track built on drums and bass, 'Don't You Wait' finds Solange in a state of clear-eyed severance. The song moves through declarations of exhaustion: she has given everything she has to give, looked long enough at the people and places around her, and found nothing worth the investment of her time. The refrain settles into a kind of weary arithmetic, weighing what was built against what was taken, what was promised against what arrived. The chorus is an instruction, repeated with gathering force. Don't wait for her. She is leaving, and she will not be delayed by obligation, sentiment, or the weight of history. There is no negotiation in the lyric, no softening. What emerges is a portrait of someone who has calculated the cost of her own accommodation and decided the price is too high. Her mother, Tina Knowles, contributes a spoken statement to the track, adding another layer of witness to the song's architecture of departure.
