About This Track
Stormzy opens his album with a statement of intent and survival. 'First Things First' finds him recounting a climb from street life and family conflict towards a harder-won stability, the narrative threaded through with the weight of loyalty to those still trapped in that world. He moves between boast and confession, claiming money and muscle whilst acknowledging the mental toll of sudden visibility and the false friends it attracts. The track builds its authority through specificity and refusal. Stormzy names the pressure from those who want him to fail, the grief of watching others fall, the gap between his actual life and the caricature the press has constructed. He raps like someone who has earned the right to speak plainly about violence and survival without needing to perform either. The production sits him in space to do it, spare and heavy at once.
