Óbudai-Sziget

Obuda Island, or Obudai-sziget, is a sizeable green island in the Danube in northern Budapest, once the site of the Ganz Danubius shipyard and now known across Europe for one thing: it is the week-long home of Sziget Festival. What began in 1993 as a modest student gathering has become one of the continent's largest and most international festivals, drawing more than a thousand performances and a crowd that is roughly half non-Hungarian, all camped out on the island for the duration. As a festival site rather than a fixed room, its character is the sprawl itself, a temporary city of stages that has hosted Iron Maiden, R.E.M., the Sex Pistols, Jamiroquai and The Killers over the years, with Florence and the Machine, Twenty One Pilots and Lewis Capaldi among the names announced for 2026. The setting, an island you reach by bridge and effectively move onto for a week, is a large part of why Sziget feels less like a festival you attend and more like one you inhabit.
