Thalia Hall is the kind of room that makes you look up. Built in 1892 in Chicago's Pilsen neighbourhood by saloonkeeper John Dusek, its theatre was modelled on the Old Opera House in Prague, a nod to the Bohemian community that surrounded it, and it has played host to everything from immigrant theatre to a campaign speech by William Jennings Bryan in 1900. Designated a Chicago landmark in 1985, it sat half-forgotten until the team behind the Empty Bottle restored it and reopened it as a live venue in 2014, balcony and ornate plasterwork intact. The result is one of the more atmospheric mid-size rooms in American touring, an intimate place a reviewer once likened to a living room shared with 900 friends. It leans towards the adventurous end of indie and experimental music: Tortoise, Mount Kimbie and Hinds have all performed in the round here, and The New Pornographers sold the place out in 2023. The grandeur and the proximity are the draw, in roughly equal measure.
