About This Track

'TRIP' finds Brockhampton wrestling with suburban entrapment and the fantasy of reinvention. Kevin Abstract and Ameer Vann trade verses over auto-tuned production from Romil Hemnani, the song pivoting between escapist longing and the weight of not fitting in. Abstract sings the defiant refrain "Today, I'ma be whoever I wanna be", whilst Vann counters with the claustrophobia of being trapped in a small town where everybody feels the same. The track touches on alienation, substance use as escape, and the particular sting of racial otherness in suburban spaces. Beneath the melodic surface sits something rawer. Abstract moves between self-deprecation and survival, sketching a portrait of adolescent outsiderdom: the chubby kid in a family of athletes, the isolation that comes from not belonging. The song builds its power not through bombast but through the accumulation of small, specific griefs. By the final chorus, the fantasy of transformation has become something more fragile, a mantra repeated as much for reassurance as conviction.

"TRIP" is a track by BROCKHAMPTON, from the album SATURATION, released 8th June 2017. The track is 3:23 long. It's filed under Hip-Hop/Rap. Full lyrics are available below. Dork has published 6 articles about BROCKHAMPTON.

Lyrics

TRIP

Today, I'ma be whoever I wanna be
Today, I'ma be whoever I wanna be
It's a boy fantasy, it's a girl fantasy
This is our fantasy, baby boy, boy, boy
Today, I'ma be whoever I wanna be
Today, I'ma be whoever I wanna be
It's a boy fantasy, it's a girl fantasy
This is our fantasy, baby boy, boy, boy

Flap, flap, flap your wings, go high
Go high, go high
Ride, ride, ride, ride, ride around tonight
This little town, I wanna say goodbye
To everybody here 'cause they're all the same
I hate this place
And everybody here is all the same
Life's a disgrace

Today, I'ma be whoever I wanna be
Today, I'ma be whoever I wanna be
It's a boy fantasy, it's a girl fantasy
This is our fantasy, baby boy, boy, boy
Today, I'ma be whoever I wanna be
Today, I'ma be whoever I wanna be
It's a boy fantasy, it's a girl fantasy
This is our fantasy, baby boy, boy, boy

Flyin' on my rocket ship, I'm on an acid trip
I need another pill, snort and let it drip
I'm with my white friends, we're gettin' wasted
Trapped in the suburbs, we suffocatin'
We get all our drug and edication
"You came with black folks?" Hoe, your parents racist
You say they hate me? well, I love them
We still roll up, we still best friends

Everybody smilin', I don't see what's funny
Everybody friends, guess I wasn't lucky
Family full of athletes, I was kind of chubby
Shit was never sunny, wrists were sorta bloody
Lick my wounds with honey, save me for the vultures
I'm fallin' in the void, I don't know what I discover
I know I could hear the thunder, I can feel the hunters
They be preyin' on my hunger
I won't let 'em make me suffer 'cause

Today, I'ma be whoever I wanna be
Today, I'ma be whoever I wanna be
It's a boy fantasy, it's a girl fantasy
This is our fantasy, baby boy, boy, boy
Today, I'ma be whoever I wanna be
Today, I'ma be whoever I wanna be
It's a boy fantasy, it's a girl fantasy
This is our fantasy, baby boy, boy, boy

Oooh, take a moment
Do you take a moment?
Do you take a moment?
Oooh, take a moment
Do you take a moment?
Do you take a moment?
