About This Track
The fifteenth track on BROCKHAMPTON's 2017 album 'Saturation', 'MILK' threads confessional verses from Kevin Abstract, Matt Champion, Dom McLennon, Merlyn Wood, and Ameer Vann over production by Romil Hemnani. The song maps the anxieties of early adulthood with unsparing detail: financial precarity after moving to California, the disorientation of dropping out, the loneliness of being the only Black student on a campus full of people who take direction well but lack passion. Abstract opens with paranoia and self-reproach; Merlyn recounts applying for food stamps and leaving before the rent was due; later verses catalogue the small humiliations of broke independence and the wish for a phone call that never comes. The refrain anchors the track's purpose: a repeated vow to get better at being oneself, to get better at everything, voiced over a backdrop of isolation and the hope for simple companionship. The title may nod to LGBT activist Harvey Milk, whose message of self-acceptance and pride resonates through the song's insistence on embracing who you truly are whilst reaching for something more. The closing mantra repeats the ambition to be somebody someday, the repetition itself a kind of self-administered reassurance. It's a song about survival in the gap between aspiration and circumstance, written by a boy band still figuring out how to live in the world they've chosen.
