About This Track

A catalogue of misfortune set to a darkly comic beat, 'That's How...' sketches the small humiliations and larger catastrophes that befall people across a range of scenarios. The song moves through vignettes: the loudmouth who gets beaten down, the bullied student, the hater ejected from a crowd, the person caught with drugs, the person deceived on a blind date. Each verse lands on a refrain that names the consequence, delivered with a matter-of-factness that doubles the joke. D12 treat the song as a kind of public service announcement, a warning wrapped in humour. The group cycles through its members, each taking a verse, and the repetition of the structural conceit (setup, comeuppance) builds a rhythm of its own. There is no moralising here, just the blunt observation that certain choices and certain attitudes tend to end badly, and the group's delivery suggests they find the inevitability of it all darkly amusing rather than instructive.

"That’s How..." is a track by D12, from the album Devil’s Night, released 5th June 2001. Full lyrics are available below.

Your parents don't like me, but guess what? (What? Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha)

('Cause Bizarre don't give a fuck)

[Verse 13: Kuniva, Eminem]

Chokin' your wife all in front of your peeps (Bitch)

She toss a brick through the window of your Jeep

Get back together by the end of the week

That's so sweet (Slim and Kim argue too much)

[Verse 14: Proof & Kuniva]

Invite a ho to your house while your bitch is out

Now you got your dick all up in her fucking mouth

Pull it out and then you bust off on her favorite blouse

(That's how Clinton got caught up)

[Verse 15: Kon Artis, Kuniva & Swifty McVay]

Steal cars, wreck bars, get fucked up beyond

Whities (Whities, man), jews (Jews)

This is how it happens to you

That's how people get fucked up

Niggas (Niggas), crackers (Crackers, uh)

Whities (Whities, uh), jews (Jews)

This is how it happens to you

That's how people get fucked up

Niggas (Niggas, come on), crackers (Crackers, man)

Whities (Whities, man), jews (Jews)

This is how it happens to you

That's how people get fucked up
