About This Track

Dacus sits in a room with friends, half-listening as Natalie defines limerence while someone plays video games and she eats popcorn to keep quiet. The song's real subject emerges in the silence: a creeping awareness that she wants to betray the person she loves, and that the prospect makes her feel alive. She knows the difference between a lie and a painful truth, and she knows which one she'll choose. The lyrics trace a familiar trap. She tries to outrun the feeling with parties and dancing and the casual touch of a stranger, but the arithmetic doesn't work. Staying busy won't erase what she wants. The stillness of her current life, the one she's supposed to treasure, threatens to suffocate her. 'Limerence' is a song about the quiet horror of recognising yourself as the problem in something beautiful, and finding yourself powerless to stop.
